Art.7 It shall be prohibited to retain > 30% by live weight from fixed gear unless mesh size ≥ 140 mm

Trawling for Shrimp

Permitted mesh size range 16mm-31mm

Maximum beam trawl length 24metres.

Must have at least 60 % target species.

Target species:-   Common  Shrimps(crangon spp) or Aesop shrimp          (Pandaius montagui)

The Shrimp Fishing Nets Order 2002

These requirements do not apply to boats towing nets with aggregate beam width of 8 meters or less or net headline of 8 metres or less.

These requirements also do not apply if the catch consists of less than 60% shrimps and the retention of fish is permitted under 850/98

No British fishing vessel shall carry or deploy a net, whose mesh measures between 16 and 31 mm unless a separator of mesh size at least twice that of the codend and no more than 70mm is fitted across the entire cross-section of the net in such a way that fish must pass through it to reach the codend and that there is a hole in the net through which all fish that do not pass through the netting are able to escape.

Or

A rigid grid with spacing of no more than 20mm is fitted across the entire cross section of the net fitted in such a way that fish must pass through it to reach the codend and that there is a hole for fish to escape

Sieve netting

Sieve netting shall be attached inside the trawl in front of the codend and shall not extend into the codend by more than one-third of the length of the codend.

Up to two pieces of sieve netting may be used at the same time provided these are attached to the upper half and lower half of the trawl respectively and do not overlap

Trawling for Sprat / Smelt / Eel

Permitted mesh size range 16mm-31mm

The catch retained on board must consist of:

at least 90% of any mixture of two or more target species, or

at least 60% of any one of the target species and no more than 5% of any mixture of cod, haddock and saithe and no more than 15% of any mixture of the species marked with the symbol Ø on list .

This sets a minimum of 60% sprats but Regulation 1434/98 – herring landed for industrial purposes – states that when a catch consists of a mixture of herring and other species which are not sorted the herring shall not exceed 20% by weight of the total combined weight or herrings and other species

Target species:- Sand eels, Norway pout, Smelt, Poor cod, Silvery cod, Red bandfish, Sprat, Eel, Anchovy, Blue whiting, Argentines, Sardine.

Landings may contain up to 10% undersized sardine, anchovy, herring, horse mackerel and mackerel (Art19/2(a))

Undersized target species for larger mesh sizes may be landed when mixed with catches if not sorted or sold for human consumption (Art19/2(b))

Trawling for Herring

Permitted mesh size range 50mm – 54mm.

The catch retained on board must consist of:

– at least 90% of any mixture of two or more target species,

– at least 60% of any one of the target species and no more than 5% of any mixture of cod, haddock and saithe and no more than 15% of any mixture of the species marked with the symbol ÿ on list.

(e.g. minimum 60% herring + 5% cod + 15% whiting + 20% other)

Target species:- Mackerel, Horse mackerel, Herring, Blue whiting, Argentines, Squids, Garfish, Pouting, Wedge sole and Prawns, shrimp, sardine, argentines, blue whiting, anchovy, eel, sprat, red bandfish, silvery cod, poor cod, smelt, norway pout, sand eel

Landings may contain up to 10% undersized sardine, anchovy, herring, horse mackerel and mackerel (Art19/2(a))

Trawling for Sole, Bass, Skate, Whiting, Plaice etc.

Permitted mesh size range 80mm- 99mm

These measures do not apply if at least 40% of catch is sole and no more than 5% cod

Top sheet of 140mm minimum diamond mesh is required. This panel must be attached to the headline of the net or three rows of netting material attached to the headline and extend towards the posterior of the net for at least 15 meshes.

Plus an 80mm square mesh panel is required in compliance with 850/98 Art.7 below

Square mesh panel 850/98 Art.7

Any square mesh panel:

(a)        shall be placed in the top half or top sheet of a net in front of any extension piece or at any point between the front of any extension piece and the posterior of the cod-end;

(b)       shall not be obstructed in any way by either internal or external attachments;

(c )       shall be at least 3 meters in length except when incorporated into nets towed by vessels of less than 112 kilowatts, when it must be of at least 2 metres in length;

(d)       shall be constructed of knotless netting or of netting constructed with non-slip knots, and shall be inserted in such a way that the meshes remain fully open at all times while fishing;

(e)        shall be constructed so that the number of meshes in the anterior row of meshes of the panel is equal to or greater than the number of meshes in the posterior row of meshes in the panel and shall be positioned  not more than 5 diamond meshes from the salve edges at the rear end of the panel

Must have a minimum percentage of target species, of at least 70%.

Target species:- Sole, plaice, hake, megrim whiting, brill, pollack, dab, cuttle fish, sea bass, flounder, lemon sole, dogfish, witch, john dory, queen scallop, variegated scallop, red mullet grey mullet, grenadiers, hairtails, anglers, skates and rays, sea bream, turbot.

By-catch of cod limited to 20%

Trawling for Cod

South of 51°N(Hythe Bay to Sussex).

Codend mesh >100 mm

80-99mm 30% bycatch of cod

North of 51°N(Hythe Bay to Essex)

Cod recovery measures 2056/2001 apply.

Codend mesh >120 mm (No by-catch restrictions apply)

Mesh size range 100-109mm & 110-119mm

A 90mm square panel must be fitted.

No more than 20% cod permitted

Mesh size 80 – 99mm

If no square mesh panel fitted a maximum of 5% cod and min of 70% of target species.

If square mesh panel is fitted a maximum of 20% cod and min of 70% of target species.

BEAM TRAWLS ONLY

80mm – 99mm mesh permitted provided no more than 20% cod is retained

Maximum combined beam trawl length 9m

No square mesh panel required

Top sheet of net must consist of a panel of netting of 180mm diamond mesh. The panel should extend into the posterior of the net by the number of meshes determined by:

(1)       dividing the length in metres of the beam of the net by 12;

(2)       multiplying the result obtained b 5,400

(3)       dividing the result by the mesh size in millimetres of the smallest mesh in the panel; and

(4)       ignoring and decimal

Minimum percentages of the target species for towed gear

At all times during a fishing voyage, and following sorting of the catch, the percentage of target species retained on board shall be at least half of the minimum percentages of the target species

Double or Triple rigged Trawlers

Whenever more than one net is towed simultaneously by a fishing vessel or by more than one fishing vessel, each net shall be of the same mesh size range.
